Welcome and opening session - Koha - He Taonga mō tātou, A history of Koha The history of Koha, from its conception in 1999 to its current state, including why was Koha written, why was it released as Free Software/Open Source, how was it written, how the community grew, major milestones, NPL Library, Unido, web based circulation, Koha 3.0 etc.
[Square hole/Round peg: Open Source ILS vs. Proprietary ILS]
Vicki Teal Lovely
Once you have selected Open Source as your ILS, there are a lot of decisions that need to be made. The experience is quite different than that of working with a proprietary vendor. Vicki will talk about the experiences that SCLS had as they worked through these decisions, including sorting through software development options, web hosting vs hosting locally, and whether to use a vendor for support. It really was like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.
Nicole Engard
This presentation will include an overview of the ‡biblios.net service and the cataloging tool associated with it. This tool will be integrated directly into Koha 3.2 and so this presentation will be useful for all those interested in cataloging in Koha or outside of Koha.
Paul Poulain
The most important tables for cataloguing, issuing, patrons, and the most important parameters tables for migrating your data smoothly into Koha.
Disaster Recovery with Koha on Debian
Clay Fouts
Koha’s data storage method makes disaster recovery easy! In this session, we’ll discuss disaster planning, backup strategies, and a quick-and-easy recovery process to get your library up and running again quickly!
Koha demo: Cataloging and Acquisitions
Brendan Gallagher
Nicole Engard
This presentation will give a summary of the tables in Koha and show how to write simple reports using SQL. Attendees will leave with enough information to be able to write simple end of the year reports as well as general statistic reports.
Joe Atzberger
The presentation will have two parts. The first will enumerate the various scheduled jobs (cronjobs) that your Koha system should be running, and the options available for each, including: Advanced Notices, Long Overdues, Overdue Notices, Fines, Message Queue Processing, and Zebra Indexing. The second part of the session will briefly explain what goes into writing a good cronjob, with a look at some examples and perl modules you can use to help.

Empowering your Organization
Lori Ayre
Sure Koha is exciting because it is free and Open Source, but the best part of moving to Koha is the opportunity to control your destiny. With an Open Source Library System (OSLS), there is the potential to empower your staff and optimize the user’s experience by getting involved in improving your software. But if you treat Koha like “just another ILS” you are missing out on the chance to shift the culture of your organization from “learned helplessness” to one in which everyone can contribute to enhancing their working environment…and, it doesn’t mean you have to be a programmer! This session uses activities that will help participants understand (from the inside) the cultural shift that needs to happen so they can take advantage of their participation in this Open Source project and not just remain passive bystanders.
[Koha Integration: RFID, SIP2 and LDAP]
Joe Atzberger
Self-Check scanners, PC Reservation software, or RFID return chutes? I’ll show you how to setup and run Koha’s SIP2 server. Or maybe you want to keep your certain user information (like passwords!) automatically in sync with an external authentication server? LDAP is the answer here.
David Schuster
Show how one library uses MarcEdit a free program, to massage records before loading them into Koha. During the time of transition we have had to manipulate holding tags, extract records, edit in batch and reload them to cleanup and adjust existing records.
Koha demo: Circulation and OPAC
Nicole Engard
17 April 2009
Joe Atzberger
A look at Koha’s internal database structure using the mysql command-line. This isn’t to teach you SQL, but where to look in Koha tables for relevant data.
[Customize the Koha 3 OPAC to fit your library!]
Owen Leonard
The Koha 3 OPAC can be styled to match your library’s identity. Use custom graphics, style sheets, and JavaScript to make the OPAC work for you. Knowledge of HTML and CSS recommended.
‡biblios.net Web Services
Galen Charlton
‡biblios.net is a new Software-as-a-Service offering based on the open-source ‡biblios metadata editor. ‡biblios.net provides free access to the world’s largest database of openly-licensed library records–available under the Open Data Commons license and accessible via ‡biblios.net_Web_Services (BWS). BWS is a simple set of APIs that enable applications to interact with the database. This talk introduces BWS and provides examples of how it can be used by libraries/museums/archives as a platform for storing Openly Licensed Data.
[Update on the status of developments for version 3.2 of Koha]
Galen Charlton and Paul Poulain
How does sponsorship of new features and the RFC process work? What new development is on the horizon?
