Using Zotero
Zotero has a good guide and introduction on their website.
The Library Research Guide at Georgia State University also provides a great introduction to using Zotero.
Aim
Maintain and improve the current bibliography about Koha.
Have useful articles about Koha all in one place that can be easily referenced.
Accessing
The Koha Zotero bibliography is available at https://www.zotero.org/groups/6684/koha/items
It is a public group, so anyone can add and edit items.
Recommended:
- Use the desktop version of Zotero.
- Use the plugin available for your browser to more easily add items.
What to add
Items about Koha, including:
- case studies and experiences in adopting and implementing Koha;
- commentary about free and open source software and libraries;
- journal and academic articles about Koha;
- KohaCon presentations and videos; and
- tutorials, tips and how tos.
Adding new items
Follow these steps when adding new items:
1. Add item to Zotero - using browser plugin or adding from Zotero.
2. Check the metadata added by Zotero and make sure it is as complete as possible.
3. Add tags as appropriate.
4. Add to appropriate sub collection as appropriate.
5. Check to see that the item is available in the Internet Archive - browser extensions for Firefox and Google Chrome make it easy to check and to add web pages, PDFs, videos, etc.
Conventions
Use these conventions for the fields for entries:
- Title: use sentence case, with nouns capitalised.
- Abstract: keep succinct.
- Date: in full, for example wherever possible: 13 December 2018, December 2010.
- Language: spell in full, for example: English, French, German, Spanish.
- DOI: put in full as a URL with https://doi.org at the start, for example: https://doi.org/10.1108/10650751111106555.
- Accessed: if you have to manually enter the date for URL access use the format YYYY-MM-DD, for example: 2019-02-21.
- Extra: put a note in this field if you you think it is particularly noteworthy, and the reason why.
The main goal here is to keep as consistent as possible, if unsure look at other similar items.
Tags
Add tags as follows, where applicable:
- Case studies (includes implementation stories): include tags for the type of library, country (in Title case), and adoption.
- Type of library (so that you can bring up case studies): university library, public library, school library, special library, corporate library, medical library.
- Country the item relates to, where applicable: enter in full, for example: United States, New Zealand, United Kingdom.
- Releases: if an item is about a specific release, tag it with the release number, for example: Koha 3.2, Koha 18.11, etc.
- Koha modules, tools and components: if an item is about a particular area of Koha, use the appropriate tags, for example: reports, opac, cataloguing, circulation, offline circulation, etc.
- Support companies: names of support companies, for example: BibLibre, ByWater Solutions, Catalyst, etc.
- ILS software: names of integrated library software mentioned, whether proprietary or free and open source.
- Library names: names of libraries that have adopted and implemented Koha (not using this one at the moment).
Sub collections
These are the current sub collections:
- Adoption: any items such as blog posts or press releases about organisations adopting Koha, use case studies for more indepth articles
- Awards: information about any awards Koha or community members have received.
- Business case: items about developing a business case for using Koha and open source software.
- Case studies: case studies and stories from libraries that have considered and adopted Koha.
- Community: items about the community.
- Development process: items about the development process.
- History: items about Koha's history and origin.
- Koha events:
- KohaCon: presentations and items about KohaCon's - a sub collection for each year.
- Open source in libraries: general items about free and open source software in libraries.
- Presentations: presentations about Koha.
- Releases: items about Koha releases.
- Trademark: items about what we no longer talk about.
- Tutorials: tutorial, tips and how to items.
- Usage: any items about statistics and usage of Koha, including number and types of libraries using Koha.
Koha Community website bibliography
There is a page on the Koha Community website for the Koha bibliography (Documentation > Koha Bibliography).
The intent is to include a selection of some of the best articles about Koha, and then link to the complete bibliography.
This is created by generating a report in Zotero, and then raising a bug for the website to get an updated version added.
This should be done every three months, or when significant changes required.
